Safaricom is widely regarded as one of the best employers in
Kenya. It pays its people reasonably well, and it is a prestigious place to
work. Given these facts then, it is no wonder that one of the most frequently
asked questions is as to how exactly people manage to get jobs at Safaricom.
The typical person asking this question will obviously tend to be an individual (working professional or recent graduate) who has a burning desire to get a Safaricom job.
So, how exactly do people get Safaricom jobs?
Well, my sense is that people get Safaricom jobs after
applying for them. So every once in a while, you are bound to come across ads,
indicating that such and such positions at Safaricom have become vacant – and inviting
people to make applications. So really, if you are eager to get a job at
Safaricom, the most important thing is to be on the lookout for such ads. When they
appear, you should go ahead to make an application. You could then be invited
for an interview, which could culminate in you getting your dream job at
Safcom.
If you do have access to people who work at Safaricom, you
can network with them, and try to get them to tell you how exactly they got
their positions. Was is by responding to Safaricom jobs ads? Or was it by
delivering their CVs to Safaricom, having the CVs put in Safaricom’s database
and waitng for any open positions? Or was it through 'connections'?
It is important to understand that big companies often
retain the services of recruitment agencies, to get employees on their behalf. So
that is yet another possibility you need to look at. I don't know if Safaricom uses that approach. This is perhaps something you
can only know by networking with individuals who work at Safaricom or by calling Safaricom HR.
There
is yet another strategy that big companies use to get employees, namely headhunting.
So you need to know whether this is a strategy that Safaricom uses, and if so,
how exactly they go about it. Needless to say, in most of the organizations
where headhunting is used, it is only for staff with exceptional skills,
talents and/or proven track records.
